In 2008, Juan Maravilla and his wife, Alma Ignacio, opened an east Salem bakery without an ounce of culinary training between them.

When they first considered opening a business, a liquor store was at the top of their list. They later decided against it since their children wouldn’t be allowed inside. Encouraged by a relative who owned a bakery, they decided to open Maravilla’s Bakery instead.

Open seven days a week, the store turns out at least 3,000 pieces of bread each day. It’s still at its original location at 3815 Devonshire Ave N.E. #105, open 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. on the weekend.
