After reading thousands of messages sent to and from ChatGPT, several parents of children and young adults who died by suicide filed lawsuits against Sam Altman’s OpenAI.
The company is facing seven lawsuits, four of which involve suicide, that were filed on Thursday in California courts. They claim ChatGPT has driven users into delusional states and has pushed some to commit suicide.
The suits claim, “OpenAI knowingly released GPT-4o prematurely, despite internal warnings that the product was dangerously sycophantic and psychologically manipulative,” according to Social Media Victims Law Center . The complaints also allege wrongful death, assisted suicide, involuntary manslaughter and negligence claims.
OpenAI told The Associated Press , the suicides are “incredibly heartbreaking”
