Shutout puts CNU in C2C final at home
Top-seeded Christopher Newport, hosting the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference’s six-team championship tournament, defeated fourth-seeded UC Santa Cruz 2-0 Friday to advance to Sunday’s final despite being outshot 20-12. Hayden Dewey made four saves for a shutout.
Carson Friedlein scored in the 11th minute, getting assists from Drew McWhinney and Caleb Jones off a play that begin with a corner kick. Jones then bounced in a long free kick from near the left sideline in the 63rd minute. The Banana Slugs’ year ended at 10-7-1.
The Captains (11-2-5), ranked 22nd in NCAA Division III, will compete for the trophy against the victor of Friday’s late semifinal between No. 2 Mary Washington and No. 3 Salisbury. The Sea Gulls beat No. 6
