These were the words said to me in the months leading up to high school. When I started Grade 8, I was nervous about even using the washroom. The rumours about vaping in the washrooms during lunch and breaks between classes were constant.

At the Grade 8 parent-information night at my high school, the principal and vice-principal were asked about vaping in the washrooms by a concerned parent. They acknowledged that staff were aware of the ongoing problem, but explained that it is extremely hard to monitor, as vaping is quite discreet and they often don’t catch any students in the act.

They also added that while supervision and checks were in place, the reality is that teachers can’t be everywhere
