BANGOR —While Maine’s airports have largely been quiet, travelers are starting to feel the ripple effects of flight reductions linked to the federal government shutdown.

Earlier this week, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) would limit flights by 10% at the 40 busiest airports over the next week. In a statement, FAA officials cited the shutdown, saying:

“Since the beginning of the shutdown, controllers have been working without pay, and staffing triggers at air traffic facilities across the country have been increasing. This has resulted in increased reports of strain on the system from both pilots and air traffic controllers.”
