JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (First Alert 4) -Missouri may be ringing in the holidays a little early this year, literally.

Jefferson City Salvation Army is kicking off its yearly red kettle and bell ringing fundraiser early to help with the increased need at the charity since the government shutdown. Thanksgiving and Christmas are always times of big need and giving, but this year it’s even greater as many Missourians are affected by the government shutdown.

Over 56,000 Missourians who work for the federal government have missed a paycheck, and over 667,000 Missourians who rely on SNAP are still unsure if any help is coming this month. Major April Clark said the Jefferson City Salvation Army has seen a 30% increase in people asking for help since the government shut down.
