BOSTON (WWLP) - The Healey Driscoll Administration is advocating for the Municipal Empowerment Act, a bill designed to allow Massachusetts municipalities to raise local revenue through increased taxes.
The proposed legislation, known as the Municipal Empowerment Act, aims to empower cities and towns in the Bay State to generate funds to enhance local services and address specific community needs. The bill suggests raising the lodging tax from 6% to 7%, the meals tax from 0.75% to 1%, and introducing a surcharge of up to 5% on the motor vehicle excise tax.
Matthew Gorzkowicz, the budget chief for the Healey Driscoll Administration, spoke in favor of the bill during a committee hearing, emphasizing the potential relief it could provide to homeowners who are burdened by high living costs.
