HOUGHTON, MI — A Michigan Tech student accused of stealing 900 American flags from a 9/11 memorial earlier this fall was sentenced Friday morning.

Avery Brynn Lawrence, who was 21 at the time of the incident, was sentenced Nov. 7, to 12 months of probation and 15 days of community service, WLUC-TV reported .

Lawrence was also ordered by a Houghton County District Court judge to pay $582 in restitution, the majority of which she had already paid, the station reported.

“I now understand how disrespectful and hurtful that was,” Lawrence is reported of saying at Friday’s sentencing. “I would like to sincerely apologize to the community and the university and everyone who was hurt by what I did.
