Local politicians and businesses are calling on Torontonians to donate money and essential items to help Jamaicans in the wake of the devastation caused by Hurricane Melissa .

A massive effort is afoot to send aid to the island nation. Mayor Olivia Chow and Coun. Michael Thompson were among those gathered at Bedessee Imports, in Scarborough, on Friday to announce that the city has created an online portal , dedicated to Hurricane Melissa relief, with information on how to donate and where to drop off packages.

Twelve fire stations, meanwhile, will be serving as drop-off locations for essential items. The aid effort includes dozens of Toronto residents and businesses.
