SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — A physician assistant with the University of Utah Burn Center is warning about the dangers of space heaters and discussing how you can stay safe as the weather gets colder.

West Hunsaker, a physician assistant at the Burn Center, told ABC4 that he sees burns caused directly by space heaters, and burns caused by fires that are started by space heaters.

West said that he sees those direct burns most frequently in children and people with conditions like neuropathy or diabetes that limit their ability to feel pain or heat. People are also often injured when a space heater tips over and it falls on them.

People with decreased sensation often don't realize just how hot it's becoming, and that can cause serious injury.
