Thousands of Volusia County families are wondering how they’ll put food on the table as the cost of living continues to rise and assistance programs face uncertainty.

“When you’re living borderline, it makes everything harder,” said John Hiatt, a SNAP recipient. “When you’re on a fixed income and they take away something, it’s a lot more impact than the wealthy.”

Many residents, like Hyatt, are turning to local food pantries for help. At The Neighborhood Center, staff say they’re seeing twice as many people as before.

“We will have to potentially make some changes or see about doing something a little different if this goes long term,” said Waylon with The Neighborhood Center.
