SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) - Members of the South Bend chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity are spending 48 hours in tents on E. Jefferson Boulevard to collect winter clothing and toiletries for homeless programs in Michiana.

The ninth annual “Sleep-Out for the Homeless” event began Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. and will continue until Sunday at 3 p.m. More than 50 volunteers are participating in the outdoor camping event.

The fraternity hopes to fill a school bus with donations for the Weather Amnesty program, Hope Ministries and The Center for the Homeless in South Bend. The group also aims to raise $15,000 to fund year-round programs for people experiencing homelessness.
