NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — After 57 years, Capt. Thomas Edwin Scheurich is finally home.

The remains of Scheurich, a U.S. Navy captain, have finally returned home after he disappeared during the Vietnam War nearly six decades ago.

A motorcycle escort featuring law enforcement from all over Hampton Roads, along with Patriot Guard Riders, led Scheurich’s family to the tarmac at Norfolk International Airport. There, a large crowd of first responders, service members, airport workers and construction workers gathered to welcome him back to Norfolk.

His remains were carried in an American Airlines flight that was also greeted with a water cannon salute.

Airport Chief of Police David Huffman said that this entire process is known as a dignified transfer.
