WHITTIER — La Serna senior running back Ayden Contreras ran for a 22-yard touchdown that turned out to be the only score of the game, and the Lancers defense held off Lakewood for a 7-0 CIF-SS Division 5 first-round victory Friday night at Cal High.
“I did not think that would be the only touchdown of the game,” Contreras said. “My M.O. is breaking arm tackles and my goal is to get what we need and to move the chains.
“This team should be known for its grit.”
With the win, La Serna (8-3) advanced to the second round and will travel to Aliso Niguel, a 7-6 winner over Millikan, next Friday night.
The La Serna defense was helped by interceptions by senior defensive back Isaac Lopez Del Haro and senior cornerback Rhyen Ramirez, and held the Lakewood (6-5) running game to just 61 yards.
