A geological explorer of note organized a party to explore the Mouse River country of what is now northwestern North Dakota in November of 1881.

George H. Eldridge was already a noted geologist with the ability to study the land and determine the mineral wealth it might contain.

We should note that the community of Eldridge west of Jamestown is named for J.H. Eldridge, who operated a large farm in the area. The original post office in the rural community was named in his honor in 1880.

George Eldridge was born in Massachusetts and educated there, culminating in graduating from Harvard University in 1876.
