A lot of garbage didn’t end up rotting in the dump — and that’s a good thing.

Halton Region residents diverted 136,570 tonnes of garbage from the landfill in 2024, according to a newly released report. That means roughly 58 per cent of all waste produced was instead processed through programs like the blue box , green cart and yard waste systems.

Sue Colclough, manager of landfill operations at the Region of Halton, said the success of the program is largely due to resident participation.

“They’re the ones that are using the programs and making us able to divert more than half of our waste that would have typically come to the landfill site. Through those programs, we achieved the 58 per cent, so kudos to all of our community for participating,” said Colclough.
