Oregon’s two largest electric utilities said Friday that they will halt service disconnections for qualified low-income and medically vulnerable customers until the end of the year.
Portland General Electric serves some 950,000 customers in Oregon. About 10% of those are enrolled in its income-qualified bill discount program, which is open to those with household incomes at or below 60% of Oregon’s median family income.
Pacific Power serves more than 800,000 customers in Oregon, Washington and California, the vast majority — 630,000 — in Oregon. It will also halt disconnections for qualified customers until the end of the year. The company has more than 68,000 Oregon customers enrolled in its low-income discount programs and nearly 2,700 certified as medically vulnerable.
