Soon after Winthrop Rockefeller became Arkansas' governor in 1967, he began a campaign to stamp out the illegal gambling that had flourished at Hot Springs for almost a century. Those who ran the casinos, bookmaking shops, bars and nightclubs didn't go down without a fight.
