Cambridgeshire has many links to the Romans, and there is one lost town next to a Roman road that is now covered by fields. This lost place, known as Durobrivae, was a significant walled Roman town near Peterborough .

The town was close to a Roman fort, created to protect the crossing point of Ermine Street over the River Nene. It sits south of the River Nene and was made up of land around 2km long and 1km wide.

The Fane Road Archaeology Group (FRAG) said Durobrivae is a “significant Roman town” which has been “little disturbed either by modern construction or by excavation”. It added: “Along with its hinterland, which is rich in agricultural and industrial sites, there is scope to develop a new level of understanding of urban growth and economics during the Roman period.
