YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – Yes, you read that right.
The Valley actually experienced a Derecho back on April 29 of this year. This was confirmed by the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh on Nov. 7.
What exactly is a Derecho?
A Derecho is a widespread and long-lived storm. This is a band of quick-moving showers or thunderstorms. The primary threat with these types of systems is straight-line damaging winds. These are winds causing damage in one direction or in a straight path with the storm.
To be classified as such, the wind damage must extend more than 250 miles. It must also contain wind gusts of at least 58 mph or greater along most of its path, with the addition of several well-separated 75 mph or more gusts.
