SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WMBD) -- The Illinois Department of Public Health is reminding the public about the potential dangers of drinking raw milk.
At least 11 people were recently sickened after consuming such products, according to a release from the IDPH.
Most milk products sold in Illinois are pasteurized, meaning they have been treated with heat to kill viruses, germs and other things that cause illness.
Raw milk is milk that has not been pasteurized, making it more likely to be a source of foodborne illness.
IDPH Director Dr. Sameer Vohra said that pasteurization is one of the greatest public health successes of the last century.
