Television and radio personality Vernon Kay has expressed his frustration with his wife Tess Daly's colleagues on Strictly Come Dancing, labelling them "two-faced" after discovering their comments about his fashion choices. During a recent episode of his BBC Radio 2 show, Vernon, 51, recounted a light-hearted debate with Tess, 56, and their daughters, Phoebe, 21, and Amber, 16, regarding a pair of baggy jeans he had purchased.
Vernon revealed that upon arriving at the Strictly Come Dancing studios at the end of October to support Tess, he was met with laughter and mockery about his jeans. Despite the teasing, he has continued to wear the trousers, which he claims have garnered support from his Radio 2 listeners.
On Tuesday's broadcast, Vernon shared a message from a listener named "Mike the trucker," who jokingly asked to borrow the jeans if he secured tickets to see Madness in concert. In response, Vernon said, "Yes... the baggy jeans! Still up for debate in our house, I’ve not convinced the kids or Strictly Come Dancing’s Tess Daly that they are a vibe. Everyone at work thinks they’re a vibe, everyone I bump into thinks they’re a vibe, but apparently when I visited Strictly Come Dancing in my baggy jeans, as I said a few days ago, once my back was turned, ‘oh why is he wearing them?’"
Clearly irritated by the gossip, Vernon exclaimed, "I’m like, how dare you? How dare you be two-faced? If you don’t like them, say it to my face, just say it! I’m a grown man, I’ll go back to the car and wind my windows up and then I’ll cry! But, you know, I can take it, I like them."
Vernon, who stands over six feet tall, explained that the jeans are the perfect length for his frame, stating, "The thing about the baggy trousers is, they’re a long enough leg, you know what I mean? They’re a 34/36 inch leg, which is pretty decent for me." He previously described the jeans as reminiscent of "80s pair of women's culottes" but maintained that he enjoys wearing them because they are "very airy."
As the debate over his fashion choice continues, it remains to be seen whether Vernon will sway the opinions of his family and Tess's colleagues.
