PLEASANT GROVE — As the federal government shutdown continues, local food pantries like Tabitha’s Way are seeing a sharp increase in families needing help.

Wendy Osborne, executive director and co-founder of Tabitha’s Way, said the nonprofit typically serves more than 1,500 families each week. But this week, that number has jumped by 15 to 20%.

“The indications that we’re seeing are, first and foremost, the reservation is being filled,” Osborne said. “Secondly, we’re seeing people line up earlier. And the questions we’re getting — either by phone or in person — are, ‘Can I please get food today?’”

Osborne said those questions reflect growing fear and anxiety among families affected by the shutdown and uncertainty around SNAP benefits.
