WESTLAKE, Ohio –
Gift card scam
A Westlake resident reported to the police on Oct. 28 that she had been scammed out of $2,200 in gift cards by someone who pretended, through email, to be her church pastor.
The phony clergyman was “very busy” and wanted the woman to buy gift cards on his behalf as a reward for staff members. He claimed to be in meetings and could not talk to her by phone.
The victim purchased Macy’s gift cards over two days to help the harried “pastor.” But she became suspicious when the “pastor” kept asking her to buy more gift cards.
Growing suspicious, the woman called her real pastor and learned that she had been scammed.
