GARNER, N.C. — A WakeMed hospital officer was shot and killed Saturday morning during a struggle with a gunman in the emergency department lobby at WakeMed Garner Healthplex, according to WNCN.
Officer Roger Smith, 59, of Knightdale, died from his injuries after being transported to WakeMed Raleigh on New Bern Avenue. The shooting occurred around 9 a.m. at the U.S. Highway 70 hospital, law enforcement officials said.
Authorities said a struggle broke out in the emergency department lobby before Smith was shot. Benji Martin Jr., 29, of Garner, was later taken into custody and charged with Smith’s murder, according to WNCN . Police said there is no ongoing threat to the hospital.
WakeMed officials praised Smith and the emergency department staff for their response.
