LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Stars, stripes and solemn memories filled the streets of Louisville Saturday as the city came together for the annual Veterans Day Parade — an event that carried extra weight this year.
While crowds gathered to honor service members, organizers also held a moment of silence for the 14 people who died in last week’s UPS crash.
“Well, camaraderie is needed right now and this whole street's full of it," James Schlenk, a Cold War veteran, said. "That's going to help the city."
It was the 62-year-old's first-ever Veterans Day parade. It was filled with mixed emotions.
“(I came)to see all the veterans that are alive. From the world wars and personal wars that they fought,” he said.
For others, the event offered a rare moment of comfort for a grieving city.
