Mac Jones already beat the Los Angeles Rams once this season, and the San Francisco 49ers will hope he can do it again this Sunday.
The Niners officially announced that Jones will be the starter this week, as franchise quarterback Brock Purdy continues to deal with a toe injury that has affected him all season. Purdy attempted to return to the helm in late September against the Jacksonville Jaguars and was ineffective, throwing two interceptions in a road loss.
For Jones, his story began against the Rams earlier on in the year, brushing off the cries of a rebuilding season in San Francisco and leading a banged-up Niners squad to a huge victory in Los Angeles. Since then, he’s piloted the ship as much as he possibly can, weaving through injuries on both sides of the ball to keep the Niners afloat in an ultra-competitive NFC West division. After a few inconsistent starts, he looked more like the Jones who beat the Rams in the team’s most recent game versus the New York Giants, throwing for 235 yards and two touchdowns with no giveaways.
Kyle Shanahan said Purdy might dress and possibly get playing time if everything aligns, but expect Jones, barring injury, to play the full game on Sunday. At 6-3 and a game behind the Rams and Seahawks in the loss column, a victory on Sunday for Jones could cement his status as the team’s starter for the foreseeable future as Purdy continues to rehab.
