SUN PRAIRIE, Wis. (WKOW) -- The City of Sun Prairie hosted its first annual Pumpkin Smash on Saturday. The event aimed at preventing pumpkins from going to waste and instead, putting them back into the earth.
Community members brought leftover jack-o-lanterns, gourds, squash and pumpkins to turn into compost. The smashing was done through a variety of games, like pumpkin bowling and a pumpkin piñata.
Not only did it make for a fun event, one event organizer said it's actually helping reduce greenhouse gases too.
"Landfills are lacking in oxygen, so instead of breaking down, they actually rot instead, which is worse for the environment than composting the pumpkins,' said Rose Daily, sustainability and resilience manager for the City of Sun Prairie.
