Australian renters could soon claim thousands of dollars in tax deductions if they work from home, following a bombshell judgement by the Administrative Appeals Tribunal (AAT).

The Australian Tax Office (ATO) is fighting to overturn the decision it says could create a massive hole in the federal budget and cost taxpayers billions.

The case unfolded after ABC radio presenter Ned Hall claimed the occupancy costs of a second bedroom in his apartment, from which he worked during the pandemic, at a cost of $5878 in expenses.

He said he had converted the room into a home office, with the deduction covering the cost of the upgrade.
