The grandfather of a 4-year-old girl who was sexually assaulted in Hooghly district of West Bengal was arrested by police on Sunday. According to police, the grandfather, who was the complainant in the case, confessed to his crime after the police launched an investigation and found inconsistencies in his statement.

Police said that the incident took place on Friday near Tarakeswar railway station premises where the child's family had been taking shelter.

In a complaint filed later, the family alleged that the girl was taken from under her mosquito net – reportedly slit open – while she was asleep and then sexually assaulted.

Hooghly Rural Superintendent of Police, Kamnashish Sen, announced that a five-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed to probe the incident.
