U.S. Sen. Ed Markey on Wednesday joined small business owners in calling on the Supreme Court to strike down President Donald Trump’s expanded tariffs, arguing they are illegal, unconstitutional and devastating to small businesses that depend on imports.
The Supreme Court began hearing oral arguments Wednesday in a case challenging Trump’s authority under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act to impose broad reciprocal tariffs and fentanyl-related tariffs. Lower courts previously ruled that Trump exceeded his powers under the law. By early afternoon, the New York Times reported that a majority of justices asked skeptical questions about Trump’s use of emergency powers.
