Fabric crafts are among the oldest domestic skills and even though they are ancient, they remain active and thriving today.
This was demonstrated this past weekend at the annual show and sale for the Belleville Weavers and Spinners Guild, one of many such chapters across Ontario, said president Monica Anderson.
The show, held in the parish hall of St. Thomas Anglican Church, featured many hundreds of items – shawls, scarves, mittens, vests, coats, hats and more, plus demonstrations of their craft.
The old fashioned spinning wheel has now been scaled down to a sleek, much smaller size but still does the same job and still requires nimble finger work. Likewise, once room-sized looms for weaving have been scaled down to a much smaller and more portable size.
