In just over a month, Toys for Tots of the Shenandoah Valley has received 500 applications for assistance in providing 1,400 local children with toys for the holidays.
Erin Henry, coordinator for the Front Royal-based distribution center, said those numbers represent a significant increase over last year, when the nonprofit had received less than 300 applications by this point in the season.
“And we didn’t start getting applications last year until about this time,” said Henry, adding that she is concerned about the uptick, but optimistic about the community’s response.
“We want to get the word out. We want to help as many people as we can. The numbers coming in are a little stressful, but I’m confident that it’s going to work out and we’re going to be able to help everybody,” said Henr
