KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - The top-seeded Kansas City Current’s season came to a stunning close Sunday at CPKC Stadium with a 2-1 overtime loss in the NWSL Quarterfinals to No. 8-seed Gotham FC.
“It is difficult because we have high expectations for us,” head coach Vlatko Andonovski said, “It’s tough for me, it’s tough for our staff, it’s tough for our players.”
The Current trailed No. 8-seed Gotham FC 1-0 late into regulation stoppage time, before heroics in the 96th minute from Ellie Wheeler.
Wheeler found the back of the net for the equalizer to keep the Current’s season alive.
Gotham FC scored the lone goal in overtime on a free kick to take the final lead in the 121st minute. This loss marks the first by Kansas City at CPKC Stadium this season.
