The first snowy day of the season has seen “about double” the number of collisions in the GTA than a normal day, the OPP reported Sunday.
OPP Highway Safety Division’s Sgt. Kerry Schmidt shared on X that the provincial police had responded to 140 collisions amid snow and winter weather as of 5:40 p.m. on Sunday.
“Fortunately, there are no serious collisions to report,” he added to the post.
In a statement to the Star, Schmidt said most of the collisions had to do with drivers not paying attention or driving too fast for the weather conditions.
In York Region, police responded to around 110 collisions between midnight and 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, according to a YRP spokesperson.
“It is significantly more than a normal day.”
