MONROE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) is investigating an in-custody death at the Union County Detention Center, the sheriff's office says.

During a routine check around 12:52 a.m. on Thursday, November 6, officers found Paul Metcalf unresponsive following an apparent suicide attempt.

Medical staff attempted life-saving measures before EMS arrived and transported Metcalf to a local hospital. Officials say Metcalf passed away Sunday afternoon.

Metcalf was accused of possessing more than 23,000 images of child sexual abuse material. He was being held on multiple counts of sexual exploitation of a minor under a $400,000 bond.

Union County Sheriff Eddie Cathey requested the SBI to investigate the death.
