The Assam government approved two landmark decisions during a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma at Lok Sewa Bhawan, Guwahati, on Sunday, November 9.

The cabinet gave its nod to the Assam Prohibition of Polygamy Bill, 2025, which seeks to outlaw polygamous marriages across the state, with the exception of areas governed under the Sixth Schedule. The bill aims to safeguard women from emotional, social, and financial harm resulting from polygamous relationships. It also proposes compensation and legal protection for victims to ensure justice and empowerment.
