STURGEON BAY, Wis. (WBAY) - 50 years ago, on November 10 th , the largest freighter on the Great Lakes sank in over 500 feet of icy cold Lake Superior water.

The Edmund Fitzgerald lives on in song and in the memories of the family members left behind, including two families from Sturgeon Bay.

“This is almost like the Titanic of the Great Lakes. It’s the most famous shipwreck on the Great Lakes,” says Sam Perlman, the deputy director of the Door County Maritime Museum.

The Edmund Fitzgerald has strong ties to NE Wisconsin. 2 of the 29 men lost on the Fitzgerald were from Sturgeon Bay. 41-year-old Oliver “Buck” Champeau and 40-year-old Russell Haskell.
