Members of the Stolen Generations have remembered the day they were forcibly taken from their families as small children across Western Australia, as applications opened for compensation through a state government redress scheme.
There are between 3,000 and 3,500 Aboriginal people still alive across WA who were sent away to live with strangers under government policy.
As of today, anyone who was taken as a child before July 1, 1972 can apply for a compensation payment of $85,000 and a personal acknowledgement, if they wish.
Premier Roger Cook said the redress scheme recognised the harm and trauma caused by the "ignorant" and "insidious" policy of forced removal by successive Western Australian governments.
