"Most people don't know their rights, and most people don't know how to exercise their rights," said Alex Buzicky, a member of the Topeka Tenants group. "There's a large power disparity between landlords and tenants, and we want to bring more power to tenants."

Topeka Tenants has been working with Kansas Legal Services to distribute resources and information share the rights of tenants.

Nick Blessing, a Kansas Legal Services attorney, said most of tenants' rights come from the Kansas Residential Landlord and Tenants Act.

He said written documentation is the foundation of renters law whether it's a lease, an eviction notice or anything else.
