TORRINGTON, Conn. (WFSB) - The Friendly Hands Food Bank reopened its doors Monday morning in a new facility six times larger than its previous location.

Friendly Hands Food Bank moved from its former location on King Street to a new facility on Winsted Road.

The food bank serves more than 11,000 people per month.

The new facility features shelves, coolers and shopping carts, making a visit feel more like going to a local grocery store.

The move took months to plan, but the opening was rushed due to delayed SNAP funding affecting families throughout the region.

The food bank had to close for more than a week during the move.

The closure coincided with many families going without SNAP funds on their EBT cards, creating additional demand for services.
