Ontario Provincial Police have responded to dozens of crashes after Greater Toronto Area roads were hit by heavy snowfall and left with icy conditions.

About 220 crashes were reported on Sunday through the overnight hours, OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt told _CP24_.

“Sometimes we hear about it and it turns out to be nothing but we actually got some pretty significant snow accumulation and even though it ended toward the evening hours of (Sunday) night, the temperature just dropped and whatever was on the ground, on the sidewalks, on the side streets, just turned into this crusty, hard snow, (and) ice,” he said.

About 10 centimetres of snow was recorded at Toronto Pearson International Airport on Sunday, according to Environment Canada,
