NEW DELHI: A car explosion near the Red Fort in Delhi on Monday evening has resulted in the deaths of at least eight people, with 24 others injured. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been briefed on the incident by Home Minister Amit Shah, who is closely monitoring the situation.
The blast occurred around 6:52 PM when a slow-moving vehicle stopped at a traffic signal. Eyewitnesses reported seeing body parts scattered on the road, with one local stating, "When we saw someone's hand on the road, we were absolutely shocked." Another witness described the explosion as the loudest they had ever heard, saying, "It felt as if we were all going to die."
A senior official from Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan (LNJP) Hospital confirmed that eight individuals died before reaching the hospital, while three of the seven injured are in serious condition. The police and emergency services responded quickly, with seven fire units dispatched to the scene. The fire was brought under control by 7:29 PM.
Amit Shah has directed the National Investigation Agency (NIA), National Security Guard (NSG), and the Directorate of Forensic Sciences to send teams to the site to assist in the investigation. Delhi Police Commissioner Satish Golcha stated, "All agencies, FSL, NIA, are here... The situation is being monitored."
The cause of the explosion is still under investigation, and officials have not yet provided further details. The area remains under scrutiny as authorities work to gather evidence and understand the circumstances surrounding this tragic event.
