MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Last month, West Virginia University President Michael T. Benson announced during his first State of the University address his intention to pursue membership for WVU in the Association of American Universities.

The AAU is a group of 71 universities leading in research, innovation, economic development, and other academic areas. Following Benson’s monthly report to the WVU Board of Governors last week, board chairman Rusty Hutson and member Bray Cary raised questions about the president’s plan to achieve that goal.

“I think it would be worth, in the December board meeting, maybe bringing a synopsis of why it’s important, which, by the way, we all know it’s important. We think it’s a great goal, but what it will entail in generalities to get there,” Hutson said.
