MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) - We are counting down to America’s 250th birthday next summer! All year long, we are sharing our “We The People” series highlighting the people, places, and things of the past that have shaped our country what it is today.

Camp Randall Stadium has seen plenty of victories on the football field over the years. The first football game played at Camp Randall was in 1917. But before that, Camp Randall played a huge part in getting troops geared up for war. In fact, Camp Randall began as a training ground for Union soldiers during the Civil War.

“It’s a place where soldiers gathered and would then be sent out to different theaters and battle areas,” said Lee Grady, senior reference archivist with the Wisconsin Historical Society.
