Students from across Texas were in Fort Worth over the weekend to put their barbecue skills to the test in a Texas High School BBQ, Inc. regional competition hosted by the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo.

The sun wasn’t even up yet Saturday morning when teams got started building wood fires for their smokers and a day that would go on for at least 12 hours.

“When these kids are getting up at 3:30, 4 o’clock in the morning to light fires at 5 o’clock and start cooking at 6 and the last to turn in is at 3 o’clock today, it’s something that we can get behind and support,” said Joe Brhlik, co-chair of the second annual Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo Regional High School Barbecue competition.

Students in teams of up to five had to prepare and cook on-site in five categories – dessert, beans
