Things are reportedly getting a bit dicey in Baton Rouge as LSU administrators and former head football coach Brian Kelly attempt to reach an agreement about the latter's buyout.

Kelly, to whom the school owes roughly $54 million, was fired last month amid a 5-3 start to his fourth season with the Tigers. Although LSU has attempted to negotiate the buyout down, it appears that these attempts have been unsuccessful, and we may be headed for litigation.

In a letter sent to LSU last week that was obtained by The Advocate in Baton Rouge, Kelly's attorneys have set a deadline of 6 p.m. ET Monday for the school to agree to pay Kelly the full buyout amount. If no guarantee is made, Kelly will "pursue all available legal remedies" to receive that money, which could lead to a lawsuit.

According to The Advocate's Wilson Alexander, former LSU athletics director Scott Woodward offered Kelly a $25 million lump sum buyout on the day he was fired. The next day, that offer was upped to $30 million over two installments, but both offers were rejected.

LSU also reportedly offered to remove Kelly's duty to mitigate, which would lower his buyout if he accepted another coaching job.

According to the letter from Kelly's attorneys, he would still be open to additional offers to amend the payment terms if LSU provides written confirmation that it will pay his buyout in full. Per the language of his contract, the $54 million — which constitutes 90% of the remaining money owed on Kelly's deal — will be paid in monthly installments that run through 2031.
