LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — The Arkansas Department of Agriculture (ADA) has released a statement reminding poultry farmers across the state to be on the lookout for signs of Avian Influenza.

ADA noted that last month, the first case of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI), or bird flu, was confirmed in a backyard flock in Mississippi County. While ADA says this is the only confirmed case so far, they say preventative measures are necessary.

HPAI can lead to the death or serious illness of entire poultry flocks, as the virus spreads through contact.

ADA reminds poultry farmers of the following recommended procedures:

Wash your hands and footwear before and after contact with birds.

Restrict visitors to poultry areas.

Limit exposure to wild birds.
