SUPERIOR — A crowd braved brisk winds to watch history unfold Sunday, Nov. 9, on Barker’s Island. A new historical marker honoring the Edmund Fitzgerald was dedicated with speeches and 29 tolls of a bell — one for each crew member who was lost when the vessel sank on Nov. 10, 1975.
Superior was the last port of call for the Fitzgerald, which left the city’s docks the day before it was lost, laden with 26,000 tons of iron ore.
“I’ve been thinking all day of those 29 men who left from Superior today. And I think, you know, the families waved them off and thought, ‘We’ll see you soon.’ And they didn’t," said Teddie Meronek, a member of the Friends of the Fitz group.
