TUCKER COUNTY, W.Va. ( WSAZ / WDTV /Gray News) – A miner died following an accident at a coal mine in West Virginia, according to the state’s governor.

West Virginia Gov. Patrick Morrisey announced the death of Joey Mitchell Jr. on Thursday.

Mitchell was involved in an accident at the Mettiki Mine in Mount Storm, Morrisey said.

“I’m deeply saddened to learn of the death of one of our brave coal miners, Joey Mitchell Jr.,” Morrisey said. “Joey tragically passed away following an accident at the Mettiki Mine in Mount Storm. All West Virginians should keep Joey’s family, friends, and fellow miners in our thoughts and prayers.”

The Tucker County EMS was dispatched to the mine at 1:39 a.m., with a second ambulance dispatched at 2:08 a.m.
